Bay Window Shutters

Bay windows can be difficult to dress.

They are different shapes, sizes and may have a radiator underneath.

Often they are quite large and dominate the room.

Traditional Solutions:

Curtains and blinds are usually the modern choice but in the past, solid shutters were used as well. Just think of those lovely Edwardian houses with tall windows, they often had solid panels at the windows.

These solutions have drawbacks and that is why you may be looking for new ideas.

There are a few things to consider. Size, privacy, heat loss and cluttering the space.

What is physically possible to install, and not necessarily aesthetics, often dictate bay window dressing.

Heavy curtains keep the warmth in and the sun out but can overpower the room, especially if they are full-length.

Curtains at sill-length can look odd and break up the space. Choosing the right track or pole can be difficult too.

Blinds can help but aren't great if you need privacy at the bottom and would like the light coming in at the top. There are usually gaps down the sides between them, compromising your privacy and letting light in. Not that great if you are trying to sleep during summer nights or napping in the day. Blinds have strings, wands and or cords that can look fussy and get tangled. Safety cleats or breakaway chains are a legal requirement that may be difficult to install in certain window frames.

Shutters

Could plantation shutters be your solution?

Firstly, they look timeless and elegant.

Secondly, they can be left shut and the louvres opened to let in light but still be private.

Thirdly, they come with their own frame so no bulky fittings to intrude into the room.

Fourthly, they are an investment and add value to your home.

Shutters are a great option for different types of bay windows. Square, tapered and even round bays can be fitted with shutters. The shutters can be full-height or cafe style. Nowadays a split-tilt version allows bottom louvres or slats to move independently from top ones giving more flexiblity in privacy and light control.

We are proud of our numerous bay window shutter installations in and around Harrogate, North Yorkshire (including York, Leeds, Otley, Ilkley, Thirsk, North Stainley, Topcliffe, Green Hammerton, Wetherby and all the places in-between) the Norfolk area, and further up North in Teeside and surrounds.
