Coloured shutters, are they just a trend?

While it is clear white (and shades of white) are the most popular choice of shutter colour, other colours can have an amazing impact on a room.

Colours reflect your personality. Do you like vibrance and being different? Making a splash? Being bold? Or are you more reserved? Prefer to blend in? Don't want to create a stir? In the psychology of colour, some hues are calming, others are exciting and some simply induce joy.

Take this snazzy red shutter for instance. Totally transforms the dining room by creating a dramatic focal point. Echo the red with a few other items in the room and you have a gorgeous space.

Coloured shutters transform a room

Shutters can be supplied in so many different colours e.g Dulux or Farrow & Ball shades. The shutter below is finished in a sleek blue. The colour is bold enough to create interest but subtle enough not to overpower the room. Accessories in zingy yellow add some pizazz.

These bright yellow shutters give the impression that the sun is shining, even on dull days. When they are opened, they echo the hues of the plants outside. Bringing the feel-good factor inside.

We hope we have given you some inspiration. Shutters in any colour beautify windows and have many practical advantages too.

As for them being a trend - if you choose wisely and in keeping with the property and the style of the room there should be no reason for them to look dated in future. After all, window shutters have been around for over a thousand years and are still one of the nicest ways to enhance a property.

There is a little secret though, that most suppliers aren't going to tell you. Darker coloured shutters are more likely to show the dust on them. We are talking about dark grey, black, aubergine, navy etc. These dark colours may be exactly what the space needs to transform the room but be prepared to see dust when the light reflects off the louvres. A quick wipe with a feather duster or similar (you can even use your vacuum cleaner attachment with the brush - so as not to scratch or damage the finish - to gently clean) will help to keep them looking tiptop.
